The boy was holidaying with his family on the shores of Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands. His cries following the attack woke the child's father. When he emerged from his tent, he saw a man running from his son's tent. A senior police officer was quoted as saying the sickening attack occurred in the early hours of Thursday, July 31st, and was "extremely traumatic" for the boy and his family. Detective Inspector Calum Smith also said there were suspicions the perpetrator had been watching the child before attacking him at the campsite. The parents were sleeping in a second tent.

He added that the suspect is white, bald, approximately 150 cm tall and between 30 and 50 years old.

Police are urging people to consider whether they've seen anyone like this before or after the incident. "Do they know of people in the area who wouldn't normally be there who might fit the suspect's description? Or do they have information they can share with us?" he asked.
Police are reviewing all possible surveillance footage from the area. Detectives and uniformed officers are also interviewing other campers.
